Electrical Testing and Tagging

Subscriber:

What is the frequency requirement for testing electrical leads in an office environment. Construction sites require testing monthly.

Answer:

Testing and tagging is outlined in the Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard AS:NZS 3760:2000 entitled In Service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. The Standards that refer to matters electrical are in the 3000 series of Standards. Reference to testing is contained in the OHS Regulation 2001 in Division 8, 63 and 64.(1) (2), a, b, c, d,e,f,g and 65 (1), (2), a, b, c, d. You are also obliged to comply with the Electrical Safety Act 1945.

As to the issue of an office environment you are obliged to have any leads tested and tagged at the time they enter the workplace and such record entered into the Electrical Testing and Tagging Register so note can be made as to when they require re-testing according to AS:NZS 3760:2000. They will not arrive from the manufacturer or anyone else having been tagged for a particular workplace or indeed any workplace. You may obtain a copy of the Standard from Standards Australia either in hard copy or electronically and if you are in need of a Tagging Register then TLE Electrical stores have an example available over the counter for $20-00+GST, you can also buy the standard from them also.
